Logan Cecce, of Elmira, got up before dawn on a recent dreary morning and grabbed his crossbow. His family owned some property in Horseheads that he wanted to hunt.

It was raining when he got there. He set up and waited...and waited. At around 2:30 p.m. he saw some movement in the underbrush. Whatever it was made barely any noise.

Cecce was locked in. He turned his head and was surprised to see a beautiful eight-point buck staring straight back at him about 40 yards away. Cecce froze. He waited until the buck started walking away, then slowly raised his crossbow. He pulled the trigger but the arrow flew over the buck.

“I knew it was a clean miss, so I loaded back up to sit for the rest of the evening,” Cecce said.

About an hour later, the same buck returned to the same exact spot, but this time Cecce was ready for him. He had his crossbow raised as the buck ambled slowly into range.

Cecce took the the shot—a good hit this time. The buck took off through the underbrush. Cecce waited for an hour or so, then started looking for him. The search didn’t take long. The buck was laying just 50 yards from where Cecce had shot him.

Well done, Logan! Now go get that doe you earned.
