Here is the flow, step by step:

You start in your own wallet. From there, you bridge your BTC into Starknet as strkBTC using GardenFi.

That should take some few minutes and cost around very little in fees.

Once it lands, you open Xverse and see it sitting there. Still your BTC, still in your wallet, just now on Starknet.

From there, two things show up. A list of DeFi apps where you can put the strkBTC to use and a list of privacy options where you can shield it.

Say you pick one app, like Endur, for liquid staking. That is one action. You are not required to touch anything else.

On the privacy side, shielding a balance means it is not publicly linked by default and that gives you more control over what others can see about your BTC.

It does not mean no one can ever trace anything. If you ever want to bridge that BTC back out, you would need to unshield it first before sending it anywhere else.

This carries real risk. Smart contracts can have bugs, bridges can fail, and returns are not guaranteed.

Only use an amount you are comfortable watching closely.

For someone who has held BTC for years without touching DeFi, this is one of the first paths that does not feel like handing your Bitcoin to someone else.
