Several hours have passed since Apple’s M6 Pro showed up on Geekbench 7, revealing outstanding single-core and multi-core results that would make you want to upgrade to the next MacBook Pro or Mac mini sporting this chipset. Unfortunately, we have to be the bearer of bad news and inform readers that we have solid reason to believe these scores are fake, and not just because Apple has been reported to skip both the M6 Pro and M6 Max in favor of the M7 Pro and M7 Max.
Geekbench creator says that he has stumbled upon internal inconsistencies that conclude that the M6 Pro results might be fake
As much as we would love to witness the M6 Pro obtain single-core results approaching 5,000 points and a multi-core score that’ll put the M5 Max to shame, MacRumors reports that Geekbench’s creator, John Poole, reached out to the Apple-centric publication and told them that he had come across “internal inconsistencies” that led him to believe that the M6 Pro might not be legit
So far, we’ve tried to spot any red flags from the specifications and scores, but we couldn’t come across any. For those stating that the M6 Pro has way too high of a CPU core count to be considered a legit Geekbench 7 listing, we’d like to inform you that, thanks to the newer packaging technology dubbed “Fusion Architecture” that Apple has adopted for both the M5 Pro and M5 Max, both SoCs can feature the same CPU core count.
Additionally, the fake M6 Pro sports slightly higher clock speeds than the M5 Max’s super cores, which would be in line with Apple Silicon launches because every successive launch arrives with a slight boost to maximum operating frequency. Irrespective of whether John Poole has provided his verdict, we’d like to believe that Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has a solid track record, as it was he who broke the news that Apple would not proceed with the M6 Pro and M6 Max launches.
Whatever reason Apple has to make this decision, we’ll find out in the coming months. For now, treat whatever M6 Pro listings on Geekbench with a pinch of salt, and we’ll return with more updates.
