India’s Demat 2.0 pilot records corporate bonds on DLT and uses the RBI’s wholesale digital rupee, e₹-W, for the cash leg. The clearest improvement is timing: Issuer receipt moves from generally 2–3 days after bidding to the same day.
But does faster settlement mean actual savings?
For REC’s ₹500 crore issue at a 7.30% coupon: Each day of difference ≈ ₹10 lakh (~2bp).
The catch: the two dates needed to calculate the actual carry—the interest accrual start date and actual receipt date—have not both been disclosed.
So for now: Faster settlement is confirmed. The economic saving is not. That distinction matters as tokenisation moves from technical infrastructure to real-world financial impact.
