Sen. Steve Daines unveiled a 56-page bill aimed at modernizing how digital assets are taxed.
The proposed changes would:
• Provide tax relief for certain stablecoin payments, including rules for qualifying payment stablecoins.
• Exempt certain crypto network fees from taxation, including small transaction fees.
• Apply wash-sale rules to crypto, limiting tax-loss harvesting through quick repurchases.
• Create clearer tax rules for mining and staking, including when rewards are recognized as income.
• Establish new rules for foreign investors trading digital assets through U.S. markets and brokers.
• Simplify tax treatment for charitable crypto donations, including valuation requirements.
