The creators of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, together with Netflix, decided to conclude the show after 4 seasons rather than it getting cancelled abruptly. The showrunners recognised that the protagonist Kimmy’s journey had reached its natural ending, and the various conflicts in the story had been resolved.

They saw no point in overreaching and came up with a respectable two-part final season, which even brought Kimmy and the Reverend together for a showdown. Season 5 never got commissioned because all parties involved were of the belief that the narrative of the show was done, and any extra seasons might just harm the brilliance they had created.

Makers and Netflix Made a Joint Decision to End Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt After Season 4

When the mole women were discovered and rescued from the bunker, they had a long journey ahead of them. Kimmy moved to the big city and learned everything from the start, right from where she left off at 15 years of age.

That’s why there was a lot to unpack there, and it took 4 long seasons to help Kimmy grow into a mature adult woman after having faced unbelievable living conditions in captivity. The shrewd reverend had held the four women under the pretext of the apocalypse coming.

Right from the start, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was given a crystal clear direction by its creators and Netflix. The execution of the story was definite, and that’s the reason the show got good viewership and good ratings.

By the end of season 4, not just Kimmy, but all characters had found what they were looking for, and it only seemed right to end the show gracefully rather than dragging it, just for the heck of it.

Kimmy was now a publisher of children’s books and was living a full life. Titus was ready to star in the Lion King style Broadway, and also found his romantic match with Mikey. Lillian, their eccentric landlord, was seen continuing her activism and keeping the quirky humour of the show alive.

The makers decided not to recycle old tropes or stretch the narrative, and split season 4 into 2 parts, giving every storyline a satisfying sendoff.

Why a Season 5 Would Have Diluted the Show’s Legacy

While fans were visibly upset about the absence of a season five for Kimmy Schmidt, it’s arguable that pushing the show beyond the 4th season would have weakened its strengths.

The series was a unique blend of dark satire, absurd comedy, and rapid-fire style jokes, and its peak freshness in the earlier seasons made you laugh till you cried.

If the narrative were stretched any further, it could risk stale character beats and formulaic plots. I think ending the show when they did was a great decision to preserve Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s signature life-affirming tone.

If there were another season and the same plots were revisited over and over again, right from Titus’s rise as an actor to Kimmy’s growth, Lillian’s activism, and Jacqueline’s love life. It would have felt like overkill. By ending the show, when they did, the makers ensured that the emotional sincerity of the show was maintained.
