## @nguyenvann6_24 (KaiNoir) · 09-15 00:58 · ♥65 ↻0 💬67 Consensus changes are usually invisible to the person sending a transaction, but they determine who gets to make the decisions underneath that transaction.
Beldex is preparing to move its Proof-of-Stake consensus toward a VRF-based model, and the interesting part is not simply adding another cryptographic primitive.
The proposed design changes how validator participation is selected.
Under the current model, Beldex uses a fixed validator quorum. The VRF approach instead introduces verifiable randomness so eligible masternodes can be selected dynamically for consensus rounds. Each participating node produces a pseudorandom output alongside a proof, allowing the network to verify that the selection process followed the protocol rather than relying on an externally trusted source of randomness.
That creates a different security property.
Predictability becomes harder to exploit.
If an attacker cannot reliably know which masternodes will participate in a future consensus round, planning a targeted attack, bribery attempt, or coordinated disruption becomes more difficult. The benefit is therefore not simply "more randomness"; it is reducing the amount of information an adversary can use ahead of time.
The proposal also connects this mechanism to Beldex’s broader infrastructure. Validator selection affects more than block production. The network has described potential benefits for committee formation, reward distribution, BChat storage-server assignment and BelNet routing, where predictable infrastructure roles could otherwise create opportunities for profiling or targeted coordination.
@BeldexCoin is effectively moving one layer deeper in its security design: from making validator behavior costly to attack toward making validator selection itself harder to anticipate.
The important test will come with implementation. Randomness only improves a consensus system when the selection process, proofs, participation rules and finality mechanism work together correctly.
That makes the upcoming VRF consensus hardfork more interesting as an architectural change than as another routine protocol upgrade.
This is my personal perspective and not a call to participate or invest. https://x.com/nguyenvann6_24/status/2099664170274914335
## @the_economystic (Stephen S.) · 09-14 23:45 · ♥22 ↻7 💬7 Dear @HatomProtocol, @xExchangeApp and importantly, any users impacted by this recent +600% $MEX blow-out "exploit attempt"...
I have a serious conversation (and question(ing) for you. It's coming from a very specific mindset that I believe needs to be held in check: allowing properly decentralized usage to remain decentralized and importantly, how to protect against protocols creating economic advantage tools that could be used maliciously, but could be used by "good" players. 🧠 but we judge them as high-risk, dangerous or low in trust/credibility.
So, @HatomProtocol has now shared their recovery plan, with reopening targeted by Wednesday once recovery and safety checks are complete.
They say the plan aims to unwind the activity without user losses or protocol bad debt. If they deliver that, credit where it’s due.
But before we move on, there’s a question worth answering:
Q1: What if this was someone aggressively going long MEX?
Buy → deposit collateral → borrow → buy more.
That’s leverage. The sequence alone doesn’t "prove" someone intended to leave bad debt behind. Moving borrowed assets elsewhere doesn’t automatically prove it either. People borrow money to use it.
Q2: Hatom called this an "attempted" exploit. What specifically made it one?
Was the collateral price deliberately manipulated? Was a safeguard bypassed? Did someone exploit an economic weakness while using functions exactly as written?
Or was this a bullish position at a size the system couldn't safely handle?? ...
Using the available functions doesn't automatically make a strategy innocent. But a big position and a blacklist don’t settle intent either.
What evidence separates an attacker from a trader taking a risk the protocol allowed?
I'm open to the answer!
And Lastly, just for the record... 😅
You say "unwind."... What gets unwound? Whose positions? At what valuation? Does "without losses to users" include the borrowers liquidated during the pump?
An orderly "unwind" doesn't necessarily mean rewriting transaction history. But it does mean decisions that affect people’s money.
I'm glad there's a plan, but show us the mechanism, the accounting, and why these particular accounts warranted intervention!
We can support a recovery and ask difficult questions about it, right?
That’s the conversation I want @HatomProtocol @xExchangeApp and @MultiversX to lead. > 引用 @HatomProtocol: Update on the MEX money market incident
User funds remain safe, and the incident has been contained. The swift, coordinated response from our team and the xExchange team was instrumental in securing this outcome.
We have completed a detailed review of the incident, identified the affected accounts and positions, and, in coordination with independent DeFi experts from across the MultiversX ecosystem, developed a recovery plan designed to unwind the incident-driven activity without losses to users or bad debt for the protocol, and to support a safe return to normal market operation.
Our focus is now on completing the recovery process and restoring normal operations safely. The MEX money market and the MEX/EGLD, as well as the MEX/USH and MEX/USDC pairs remain temporarily paused and will resume by Wednesday once the recovery process and final safety checks have been completed.
No action is required from users at this time.
We understand the disruption caused by the pause and appreciate your patience. We will publish a detailed incident report explaining what happened, its impact, the recovery process and the measures being introduced to prevent a recurrence.
Thank you for your continued support. https://x.com/the_economystic/status/2099645689752142287
