German equipment maker SCHMID disclosed in its first half earnings presentation that it is working on glass core substrate equipment with key suppliers in the Intel, Nvidia and AMD chains, though metallization of through glass vias remains the technical hurdle and no customer has qualified the process yet.
Glass offers about 40% higher chip speeds and roughly half the power draw versus plastic substrates, with the flatness to mount more GPUs and HBM in one package without a silicon interposer.
